Skoda Garde 1983 (Fox18)

Skutecznie rozbudzało zmysły młodych chłopaków i kierowców Polskich Fiatów, Zastav i Ład.

W sumie wyprodukowano 11 179 egzemplarzy Skody Garde.

O miniaturze
Zielona Skoda Garde to produkt czeskiej firmy Fox18, pochodzący ze specjalnej, ograniczonej do 500 egzemplarzy serii RetroLine, opracowanej wspólnie z czeskim portalem Retro-Auta.

Głupie i drażniące niedociągnięcie.

*********

From the very beginning of its existence, Skoda Garde was a car for the few. In Eastern bloc countries only a few could afford it. In Western countries only a few wanted to buy it. Nowadays, the few remaining examples are a real catch for the fans of motoring from behind The Iron Curtain.

On the one hand launch of the Garde isn’t surprising – it continued Skoda’s coupe legacy and replaced the 110 R Coupe. On the other hand, in the reality of socialist economy, an introduction of such a “frivolous” mass-production car was quite a sensation and could be considered surprising. It could also spark jealousy of the other socialist countries.

Skoda Garde’s first official presentation took place in October 1981 in Brno. Production started in the Kvasiny plant, soon after the debut and from May 1982 it moved to the BAZ factory in Bratislava, making the Garde the first mass-produced car in Slovakia.

The compact coupe was derived from the Skoda 120 LS. The 4-speed manual transmission and 1174 cmᴲ, 54 hp engine were taken from it completely unchanged. The suspension was slightly altered however, which resulted in an improvement in handling from tragic to questionable. Responsible for this was the disastrous weight distribution (engine mounted longitudinally over the rear axle). To be fair to the Skoda, being tail-happy isn’t necessarily a bad characteristic in a coupe. For some, it’s even desired.

The biggest difference in comparison to the 120 LS was the body. A two-door fastback, with a slanted windscreen looked handsome and sporty. It was the slickest car made behind the Iron curtain at the time. It easily titillated the senses of young lads and drivers of the Polski Fiats, Zastavas and Ladas. In most cases however, it all stopped at titillating, because the car was expensive and difficult to get.

On the other side of the curtain the situation was rather different. The Garde was of course still regarded as shapely, but it was far from a dream car. Puny performance, lame build quality and identical opinion about the brand didn’t allow for conquering of the market. A discount price, on average half of what you’d pay for a Ford Escort or a Vauxhall Astra did little to help. Similarly did the opinion that Skoda Garde was a poorman’s Porsche.

The model’s career finished in 1984, with the introduction of a modified version called the Rapid. In total 11 179 units of the Skoda Garde were made.

About the miniature
The green Skoda Garde is a product of a Czech company Fox18. It comes from a limited to 500 pieces special series RetroLine, developed together with a Czech website Retro-Auta. Each car gets a credit card sized plastic certificate with a pressed serial number.

The resin model looks fantastic. A great shape is highlighted by nice paintwork. The amount of detail is just an icing on the cake. Interior wise – it’s well painted and looks good. This miniature looks so much better than the Garde by Abrex.

Despite a very good overall impression, there are a few details that deserve a reprimand. First of all, the cleanliness of the model. I’m not sure whether during its assembly there was a sandstorm in the factory or whether a vacuum cleaner has exploded, but particularly the front and back of the model were covered in a lot of dust and small bits of dirt. In addition, there were smudges on the paintwork. This is definitely the dirtiest model I had the (dis)pleasure of unpacking. I managed to clean everything with a paintbrush, but that’s not what it’s about. Just like a buyer of a new car doesn’t go to a carwash straight after buying it, a buyer of a model car shouldn’t have to clean the model right after unpacking it.

Another shortcoming, that can thankfully be fixed with some simple DIY, are the wheel rims. The manufacturer didn’t paint the small outer bits in black. I fixed that myself, and you can see the difference before and after the procedure in my photos.

With the last flaw, you can’t do a lot unfortunately. It’s a discolouration of the roof on the driver’s side. You can’t really see it in the photos, but it is noticeable in real life. It’s a very silly and annoying thing.

To finish off, I’ll just mention that on www.retro-auta.com there is a wide range of interesting Skoda models. According to the information given there, there are quite a few models in the pipeline, so it’s worth following them!
