Skoda Felicia 1994 (Abrex)

Pierwsza Skoda opracowana we współpracy z Volkswagenem i bestseller, po który Polacy ustawiali się w kolejkach. Felicia, choć niepozorna, zajmuje ważne miejsce w motoryzacyjnej historii naszego regionu.

Rok 1990. Po zmianach ustrojowych, Skodę zaczynają trapić problemy z dostępnością pracowników i płynnością produkcji. Czeski rząd dochodzi do wniosku, że jedynym sposobem na poprawienie sytuacji jest znalezienie silnego zachodniego partnera strategicznego. Ze zgłoszonych 24 ofert, wybrano 12, a w sierpniu 1990 r. koncern Volkswagen i francusko-szwedzkie konsorcjum Renault-Volvo. Ostatecznie, w grudniu 1990 r. ogłoszono współpracę z Volkswagenem.

Rok 1991. 16 kwietnia dochodzi do wiekopomnej chwili: Volkswagen wykupuje 30% czeskiej marki.  Skoda patrzy na ten mariaż z nadzieją. Polskie FSO, mając w pamięci nieudane rozmowy z niemieckim koncernem, z głęboko skrywaną zazdrością ukrytą pod warstwą przeświadczenia, że potrafi zrobić lepszy interes. No cóż…

Rok 1994. FSO z trudem modernizuje Caro. Skoda, już w 60% niemiecka, wypuszcza Felicię. Nowy rozdział otwiera się dla Skody w Pradze. Niby widać, że nowy model to po prostu gruntownie zmodernizowany poprzednik, czyli Favorit. Bardzo podobny kształt nadwozia, płyta podłogowa i benzynowe silniki 1,3l zdradzają korzenie samochodu. Niemcy poprawili jednak to, co mogli. Dodali swoje silniki: benzynowy 1,6l (75 KM) i diesla 1.9 (54 KM) i powstało auto, które zbytnio od konkurentów nie odbiega.  Czechów rozpiera duma. Auto praktycznie z miejsca zdobywa tytuł Samochodu Roku 1994 w Czechach i staje się bestsellerem. Polacy też tłumnie biegną do salonów po nową Skodzinę. Może na Zachodzie nikt w ekstazę nie wpada, ale docenić czeski produkt jak najbardziej potrafi. W 1996 r. i 1997 r. zdobywa tytuł Najlepszego budżetowego samochodu roku przyznawany przez brytyjski magazyn „What Car?”, a w roku 2000 wygrywa tą kategorię w tygodniku Auto Express.

Sukces trzeba pielęgnować, więc oprócz liftingu z 1998 r., Skoda bardzo chętnie wprowadza wersje limitowane Felicii, często z myślą o konkretnych rynkach, a większość z nich ma unikatowe logo. Zanim zacznę je wymieniać, zróbcie sobie herbatę. Albo lepiej – kawę! Bo trochę nam zejdzie…

O miniaturze

Turkusowa Felicia to Abrex. Dostępna w ofercie producenta jest już wiele lat, ale dopiero stosunkowo niedawno wprowadzono wersję ze stalowymi felgami, które według mnie do Felicii pasują najbardziej. Samochodzik sprawia doskonałe wrażenie. Zaczynając od proporcji nadwozia i czystej i równej powłoki lakieru a kończąc na świetnie odwzorowanych felgach. Plusem jest też jasnoszare wnętrze. Kilka szczegółów jednak poprawiłem: usunąłem plamki czarnej farby spod przednich świateł, dodałem błyszczące wkłady lusterek i zamalowałem bolce mocujące przednie reflektory. Nikt kapci nie pogubi z wrażenia, ale ogólna prezencja modeliku trochę na tym zyskała.

The first Skoda developed in co-operation with Volkswagen and a bestseller that buyers from Central Europe were queuing up for. The Felicia, although inconspicuous, has an important place in the motoring history of Central Europe.

It’s 1990. After political changes, Skoda begins to experience problems with worker availability and production flow. The Czech government comes to a conclusion that the only way to improve the situation is to find a strong, western strategic partner. From the 24 submitted offers, 12 are chosen and in August 1990 only Volkswagen and the French-Swedish consortium Renault-Volvo are being considered. Finally, in December 1990 co-operation with Volkswagen is announced.

It’s 1991. On 16th April a historic moment happens: Volkswagen buys 30% of the Czech company. Skoda’s looking at this marriage with hope, whilst neighbouring Poland’s FSO, remembering the failed talks with the German brand, with deeply hidden jealousy.

It’s 1994. Skoda, 60% German by now, releases the Felicia. This new chapter opens for Skoda in Prague. Yes, you can see that the new model is just a thoroughly modernised predecessor, the Favorit. Very similar body shape, chassis and a 1.3l petrol engines give away the car’s roots. The Germans however improved what they could. They added their own engines: petrol 1.6l (75hp) and 1.9 (54 hp) diesel and thus created a car that wasn’t far off its rivals. The Czechs are beaming with pride. The car almost instantly wins the Car of the Year 1994 award in Czech Republic and becomes a sales hit both at home and the neighbouring countries. Perhaps in the West no-one’s ecstatic, but they can most definitely appreciate the Czech product. In 1996 and 1997 it wins What Car’s Best Budget Car of the Year award and in 2000 it wins the same category in Auto Express’ awards.

Success has to be well looked after, so apart from a facelift from 1998, Skoda very eagerly releases limited editions of the Felicia, very often with specific markets in mind. And most of them have a unique logo. Before I begin naming them, make yourself a cup of tea. Or better yet – coffee! Because we’ll be here for a while…

About the miniature

The turquoise Felicia is an Abrex. It was available in the manufacturer’s line-up for many years, but only relatively recently a model with steel wheel rims was introduced, which suit the Felicia much better in my opinion. The car makes a great impression. Starting with body proportions and clean and even paintwork and ending with beautifully copied wheel rims. On the plus side is also the light grey interior. However, I did tune-up a few details: I removed little spots of black paint from underneath the front lights, I added glassy wing mirror inserts and painted the front light mountings to disguise them better. No-one is going to fall off their chair because of these, but the overall presence of the model did benefit slightly.
